MAYPEARL (CBSDFW.COM) – An earthquake shook parts of North Texas Sunday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey says it happened at 11:51 a.m., near Maypearl in Ellis County.
Texas is known for its summer heat, but not earthquakes.
CBS 11 News headed out southwest of Dallas to the town of Maypearl near the epicenter of the reported quake.
Surely there would be damage… broken glass… cracked streets… something. Not so much.
What we found was plenty of people with a sense of humor.
“The only earthquake I felt was when my wife got out of bed this morning,” said Maypearl resident (and possible future sofa sleeper) Dwain Montanez.
But the Montanez’s and their neighbors were out by the pool just before Noon – surely they must of felt something.
When asked, “Did you feel the earthquake?” Buzzy Burriss said, “No not at all.”
Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey say the tremor actually happened, but the earthquake’s magnitude was only a 2.7. With that you could barely feel anything.
While the Montanez’s joked about the quake that ‘wasn’t’ they were serious when talking about nearby gas drilling.
“You going to have all that drilling we got going on. You suck gas out something has to come back,” Montanez said matter-of-factly.
Meanwhile, word spread about the ‘mini’ earthquake. One group claimed, “We didn’t feel the original one but we got the aftershock.”
Since there’s no visibly physical evidence the quake even happened, for most the story of the Maypearl tremor will most likely be one told in barbershops and local diners. And since nothing was damaged and no one was hurt, that’s just fine with folks there.
